Youth Icons of Maddras India

Indian University Girls, Youth Icons of Maddras India

Two pretty girls in blue and green Sari / shalwar kameez. The lady in the foreground flashes a rather mischievous, almost naughty smile. These girls appear to be Maddras India, as can be gauged from their complexions and features. Madras is the fourth largest city in India and the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, Chennai had a population of 4.2 million in the 2001 census within its municipal corporation. The urban agglomeration of Chennai has an estimated population over 8 million, making it one of the largest urban agglomerations in India.

It has seen civilizations as ancient and cities as modern as today’s cosmopolitan. These girls are looking glorious as they going for notanki festival. In the background we can see some of Madrasi students gossiping each other or waiting for notanki. Girl in blue is looking smart and beautiful then green. What you say?

Is India adopting the western culture?

Clothes, movies, food, malls, food chains, technolgy, etc. are assets of no culture in the world. They are developmental phenomena and bound to be accepted by all if really helpful.

However when it comes to ethical values, we are losing it. Not by accepting the western culture, but by accepting things without studying them properly. In fact, the acceptance is more due to the selfish urge within us. We wanna enjoy the kind of freedom they enjoy, the rights they enjoy. But these things come with a few gul\idelines. We never accepted those guidelines. Isn’t that selfish?

Another point to ponder over is that when we wear ‘Om’ we are fanatics, but when they wear ‘Cross’ it’s cool. When we go to temples we are considered as backlogged but when they visit churches it’s devine bliss. When we bear more then 3 children we are illiterates but when they bear 6 children it’s their pride. When we light a ‘diya’ it’s a stupid custom but when they light ‘candles’ it’s the pefect way to reach god. When we join our hands we are primitive but when they shake hands they are modern. When we consider our elders and respect them we are stupids and when they split from their families it’s necessary to leave parents behind. When we tell our women to stay in the house we are hypocrites but when thier women move out and they find time to find another partner it’s liberty.

The thing is that we naver consider these things before adopting their beliefes. We blindly beleived what they believed about us but we never cared to look at the picture of hypocrisy in there…
